Created in 1928 with an initial grant of $100,000.00 to be the
Philanthropic arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the United States of
America, the three outstanding characteristics of the Elks National Foundation are:
- It is a permanent fund
- Its contributions are raised by voluntary gifts
- and the entire income from the principal Fund is available for
our Charitable and Benevolent work.
Your gift will be invested in the permanent fund, meaning the
income derived from your gift will be working for you FOREVER.
PROGRAMS PRESENTLY SPONSORED BY
THE ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION
- Scholarships for deserving students - At present the B.P.O. Elks
are second only to the Federal Government on a dollar per dollar basis. Checks are paid
directly to the school - under no circumstance can the Foundation make payment directly to
the student. The money may only be used for tuition & fees, books & supplies, and
room & board if living on campus. The Foundation has no loan programs, vocational
grants, or assistance for graduate study available, and it does not maintain a mailing
- Emergency Educational Fund Grants are set aside for children of
Elks in good standing who have died or are totally incapacitated. This is an assistance
program only; it is not intended to cover the entire cost of attending college. Applicants
must be unmarried, under the age of 23 on the date the application is signed, and
attending a U.S. American School/College/University as a full time undergraduate student.
The grant is for educational assistance beyond, and supplementary to, the usual high
school or preparatory courses. Assistance will not be extended beyond four years.
Applicants must investigate all sources of scholarships, grants and loans available
through local, state, and federal agencies before submitting an application. The grant is
for one year only. Students may submit renewal applications as long as they meet all other
- Assistance to State Elks Association Major Projects - Dealing
with Cerebral Palsy Programs, Cancer Research, Handicapped Children Programs, Preschool
Vision Screening, Specialized Medical Care.
- Elks National Drug Awareness Program - Providing drug awareness
materials aimed at the school aged child.
- The Elks National Home - A retirement home for members of the
Order providing a relaxed elegant club environment located in Bedford, Virginia.
- The Hoop Shoot Program - Celebrating its 25th Anniversary this
year, with winners of this free-throw competition having their names enshrined in the
Basketball Hall of Fame
- Elks National Service Commission - Dedicated to America's
Donations are made on a voluntary basis in the amount of $100.00
or $1000.00 payable in yearly installment of $10.00 or $100.00 per year. Donations to the
Elks National Foundation are exempt from Federal Income Taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of
the Internal Revenue Code.
The Elks National Foundation is administered by a board of seven
trustees, all Past Grand Exalted Rulers. The board's powers and duties include the
custody, investment and preservation of the funds of the Foundation; the duty to secure
and receive accretions thereto; and the authority to apply the income there from as it may
become available to such charitable, educational and benevolent purposes as they may
determine. Currently the Foundation has a net worth in excess of $200 million. New
contributions are coming in at a rate of $4.4 million per year.
